At low tide, when extensive areas of mudflat are exposed, thousand of wading birds - such as greenshanks and little stints - congregate to feed on the numerous invertebrate organisms that shelter in the mud (summer). Location: Southern part of the region; east of Port Alfred. Access: From Port Alfred the R72 (to East London crosses the Great Fish River near its mouth, the reserve is on the west bank; a gravel road runs through it to the beach. Accommodation: None. Port Alfred has a variety of accommodation options available. Other facilities: Fishing is a very popular activity both on the beach and along the river banks. Open: Throughout the year.
