BIRDING, FISHING A small reserve has been proclaimed in the area where the Great Fish River flows into the Indian Ocean. At low tide, when extensive areas of mudflat are exposed, thousand of wading birds - such as greenshanks and little stints - congregate to feed on the numerous invertebrate organisms that shelter in the mud (summer). Location: Southern part of the region; east of Port Alfred. Access: From Port Alfred the R72 (to East London crosses the Great Fish River near its mouth, the reserve is on the west bank; a gravel road runs through it to the beach. Accommodation: None. Port Alfred has a variety of accommodation options available. Other facilities: Fishing is a very popular activity both on the beach and along the river banks. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
